To make the poker chips durable, the poker chips filled with clay are always mixed with synthetic substances. Nowadays, clay poker chips are not in use because they are brittle and rather expensive. All the casinos now use poker chips made from a mixture of acrylic, plastic and composite clay.

From 1930 onwards, the extra foil of metal came to be used to render the additional durability and also for security purposes. In 1940, the sets of poker chips were printed on their edges as well as on their central areas. A decade later, all the casino and poker sites started having customized poker chips that had typical logos, and designs of the respective casino sites printed on the sets of chips. Such designed poker chips started becoming collector's items. The casinos prevent counterfeiting by mixing percentages of kaolin or clay unique with acrylic polymer synthetic.
